TX AG Paxton, Sen. Cornyn clash on X over $95B aid package.
In this May 26, 2021, photo, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, speaks to reporters at the Capitol in Washington. Tuesday’s long-delayed vote on a major foreign aid package is causing another round of Republican infighting. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Senator John Cornyn have traded posts on X, formerly known as Twitter. Paxton took aim first, shortly after a bipartisan group of senators pushed the legislation over the finish line with 70 for and 29 against.
Paxton’s post on X reads, “Unbelievable that John Cornyn would stay up all night to defend other countries borders, but not America.” Henson says Tuesday’s power struggle is no surprise after Paxton was acquitted last year of corruption charges in a historic impeachment led by members of his own party.
Henson says since most Republican voters are not on X, the public dispute between Paxton and Cornyn is primarily for the press, activists and a narrow band of very engaged voters who follow politicians on social media.
