OXON HILL, Md. — Allen’s Faizan Zaki and Keller’s Brihasa Veduru advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals in the Scripps National Spelling Bee after three challenging preliminary rounds Tuesday.

Faizan correctly spelled “kapparah,” a symbolic ceremony practiced by some Orthodox Jews to show atonement for sins on the eve of Yom Kippur. The 11-year-old, who attends Skaggs Elementary School in Plano, then had to identify, via a multiple-choice question, what it means to “corral” a herd: to gather and confine it.

Faizan first made it to the nationals when he was 7. He’s already made it further this time, spelling “jointure,” the state of being connected, in the third round.
