“Mi’kmaq people come from learning our traditional ways and language and instilling those into the future generations. And I want to see this gathering 100 years from now when I’m sitting next to the Creator, which I hope is where I’ll be. So, we must continue to celebrate our culture.” In addition, a marketplace full of food vendors selling traditional dishes and authentic Indigenous crafts lined the outside of the performance circle.“Mawi’omi means gathering. It’s about unity, supporting each other, reconnecting with our roots, and practicing our culture with honour. At one point, we were kept apart and couldn’t practice our culture. So today, we’re celebrating resilience. We are a collective force.
“Attending gatherings like this is helping the survival of our culture, and for other people who can’t be here because of their illness – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual – they can’t come up here, so I dance for them and the children. I have been dancing for about 30 years,” said Paul. “And when we come together like this, look, the children are happy, they’re running, learning new traditions, and we’re being able to talk to them about things. It’s about sharing, even sharing stories. Our language is very descriptive, so we must revitalize it.”
