Chelene Knight and Tsering Yangzom Lama join a list of 15 writers from Canada and the U.S. vying for $206,000 prize
The prize was developed to help address the continued inequality of women in the literary world. According to a statement women writers earn 45 per cent less than their male counterparts. And, while men make up 55 per cent of readers for the top 10 bestselling male authors, they make up only 19 per cent of readers for the top 10 bestselling women writers.
“We want readers to buy books by women and nonbinary writers. We encourage your readers to pick up books by the longlisted authors this month and all year — and get reading!” “The origins of the prize stem from a panel at the Vancouver Writers Fest back in 2012, when our co-founder Susan Swan joined a panel to present research about the progress of women’s writing over 40 years,” said Skoczylas. “The data showed the huge gender gap in the literary world in Canada and the U.S., and our three co-founders got together to start a prize.”Article content
