Two Alabama rivers were named among the 10 most endangered in the country.
Alabama Power’s closure plan involves de-watering the ash and compacting it into a smaller footprint farther from the river banks. The ash would be covered with a synthetic liner at the top, but would not have a liner underneath.
“After extensive study and third-party analysis, Alabama Power has chosen the option to safely and securely seal its coal ash sites, including Plant Barry,” a company statement from last year reads. “To choose the best plan, we employed the experience of multiple independent firms with deep expertise in civil engineering projects that protect the environment and natural resources.
Justinn Overton, Coosa Riverkeeper and Executive Director, said that regulators like the Alabama Department of Environmental Management should take more active steps to protect the river. The group says it takes nominations for the yearly list from local environmental groups and evaluates them based on the river’s significance to people and wildlife, the magnitude of the threat to the river, and whether a decision is expected in the next 12 months that the public can influence.
