Twitter's Fauci fan club: Elon Musk points finger at staff messaging group
In a Twitter thread, the social media platform CEO responded to a tweet claiming Dr. Anthony Fauci has never lied while working in his position as the chief medical adviser to the president. Musk linked to a Newsweek article that cited documents showing Fauci was “untruthful” in his claims that the National Institutes of Health has never funded gain-of-function studies in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.“Some good nuggets in [this] article.
It’s not clear what conversations were held in the messaging channel or how many Twitter staff were included in it. But Musk stood by his claims, inviting the social media platform to add content notes or corrections to his thread. Musk has long criticized Fauci for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for the lockdown measures imposed in the early stages. The Twitter CEO has also suggested Fauci should be criminally charged, posting a tweet in mid-December that his “pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci.”
Fauci has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984 before being appointed as the White House’s chief medical adviser in 2021 under President Joe Biden. Fauci announced in August he would step down from government service this month.
He has since announced he would step down as Twitter’s CEO after one of his own polls on the platform voted him out. It’s not clear who the billionaire will choose as his successor or when he plans to resign.
