Twitter will now allow U.S. cannabis companies to advertise on its platform — with numerous restrictions. The most significant requirement: cannabis companies can’t promote or offer for sale cannabis products.
But they’re also concerned about how to validate whether a potential advertiser is a licensed business.
The change in Twitter’s policy is so new that it’s unclear how long it will take for a cannabis brand to get through the validation process. Because Twitter’s incentive program lasts until the end of March, Deneson expects the platform will be “accelerating this review process as quickly as possible.”However, the company will have to invest resources into reviewing whether cannabis ads meet its own guidelines, which can be difficult to nail down. For example, what exactly makes an ad appealing to minors?
