Carlos Correa returning to the Minnesota Twins was a long shot, yet they convinced themselves it was a real possibility. DanHayesMLB on how the Twins’ persistence eventually paid off with Correa’s 'euphoric' return to Minnesota.
Euphoria might best describe the atmosphere late Wednesday morning as Correa and his family returned to snow-drenched Target Field, the astonishing end to an offseason saga that twisted and turned until the shortstop passed his Twins physical on Tuesday night.
Driven by a belief Correa genuinely enjoyed his season with the Twins, Falvey dreamed of receiving even the slightest opening to engage again. When the Mets paused, the Twins pounced to make their desire clear. “It’s not easy to keep calling,” Boras said. “Derek did not let notice go. He was constantly in communication, constantly calling, because they’re the organization that truly knew the leadership value in addition to the skill, and what he could mean to a franchise. I really appreciate that persistence.”The longer negotiations between Correa and the Mets dragged on, Falvey sensed his opening increasing.
“We never lost touch,” Falvey said. “At any point during that journey, any one of us could have said, you know what, we tried, we’ve gotten to the end point, we can’t go any further. But nobody .”“I finally called him back again and I said, ‘Derek, I think we have something to talk about,’” Boras said.
