Rockets guard Jalen Green, center, who committed six turnovers in Saturday's loss to Minnesota, loses control of the ball while defended by Timberwolves forward Kyle Anderson, left, and guard Anthony Edwards'MINNEAPOLIS — The Rockets knew what to do. They saw the Timberwolves’ lineup change and defensive adjustment, and they adjusted, too.
Unable to stop the Timberwolves and particularly guard Anthony Edwards, the Rockets, as has so often been their fate, had no margin for error. But they made error after error. But Sengun had propped up the Rockets, as he increasingly has this month. He scored 13 points with 11 rebounds and four assists in the first half. In his past eight games, he has averaged 19.1 points on 63.4 percent shooting, 11.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists. Since 1983-84, he is one of eight players to average at least 19 points, 11 rebounds, five rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot while making 63 percent of his shots over an eight-game period.
The Celtics had taken Sengun out a game after he made 10 of 12 shots Dec. 26 in Chicago, keying the Rockets’ most recent win. Sengun took three shots in Boston and missed them. The Lakers stopped him through the stretches James picked him up, and that was on a night a week ago when Sengun scored a career-high 33 points on 14-of-17 shooting.
At first, a Rockets adjustment worked. They briefly moved to have K.J. Martin rush to a high post to look for Sengun in a high-low pass. Sengun did not get free, but when he began getting touches at the top of the circle or the elbow, he moved to dribble handoffs or side pick-and-rolls, and things showed signs of opening up.
There were a few possessions in which the Rockets made the right decisions. Sengun got a few low-post touches and drew double-teams. One pass out ended with a Green turnover. Another led to a 3-point airball by Gordon. Sengun had a drive blocked, and he had a turnover.
