Properly structured, our calendars shape our daily experience, exercising our greatest strengths and deepest ideals.
. Over time, we internalize our experience. If we live an undisciplined life, that lack of discipline becomes part of who we are. If we live each day diligently, we bring conscientiousness to our work and personal lives. If everything in life is"use it or lose it", our calendars capture what we're using and, by default, what we are at risk of losing.
And if we don't operate by a calendar? That, too, is a kind of training, providing us with repeated experience in living unorganized lives. Here is an important peak performance principle:. If we want to become more disciplined money managers in markets, our calendars need to set aside time for detailed planning, execution, and review. If we want to become more caring human beings, we need to devote quality time to those close to us.
. Whatever I want to cultivate in my life has to become a daily part of my experience. That can turn every day into deliberate practice and progressive learning. When we think of calendars in this way, the first items that we schedule are the ones that exercise our most important competencies. Yes, of course, we need to incorporate our to-do lists of tasks and errands. But if we have overarching goals for our development, those form the basis foritems, not just to-dos.
As an active trader of financial markets, I devote a portion of my day to updating my research, a portion of the day to framing trade ideas for the day, a portion of the day for trading, and a portion of the day for reviewing my performance, and a portion of the day for turning that review into concrete goals and plans. This structuring of time enables traders to internalize a sense of mastery and progress.
One of the most important pieces of homework you can perform is to review your calendars for the past month and identify, clearly, the capacities you are actively exercising and those you are not. This tells you what you're using and what you're losing.
