According to the ATF, the number of them recovered by law enforcement increased more than 500% nationwide between 2017 and 2021. Mobile Police have seized 49 since 2022.
On Wednesday, Costello showed NBC 15 News the different types of machine gun conversion devices officers are finding in the streets. Some are easier to spot because they protrude from the firearm and allow the shooter to switch back and forth between semi-automatic and automatic. Another version, sometimes called a Glock chip, doesn't stick out from the gun and is more difficult for officers to see.
Costello says his office is focused on aggressively prosecuting cases involving these devices. On Monday, Grayson Eagan, a meth and heroin dealer who also had a handgun illegally converted into machine gun, was sentenced to 44 years in federal prison. Hassan Jones, 25, was sentenced to 45 years for drug dealing and possessing a machine gun.
Costello says possession of one will also result in years in prison. Last week, Zukinski Spelton was sentenced to four and half years for having one.
