Rescuers cried, clapped and chanted his name as they pulled Adnan Muhammed Korkut, 17, from the basement where he had been trapped. Almost 650 aftershocks and floods followed the quakes, leaving cars floating in the city of Iskenderun in Turkey. A corridor of volunteers make a line on the road to an ambulance as it is brought closer. Blankets and a stretcher are called for too.

What we witnessed here is happening right now across this region. The problem is that time is fast running out.The US Agency for International Development has confirmed it will provide $85m in urgent humanitarian assistance to Turkey and Syria following devastating earthquakes. Commercial flights carrying boxes with part of the aid landed at the Turkish airport of Adana today, with the operation expected to conclude by Friday.
