Turkey’s Supreme Election Council announces a re-run of Istanbul mayoral election on June 23

Turkey’s Supreme Election Council on Monday announced that a re-run election in Istanbul will be held on June 23. The council members accepted the governing Justice and Development Party's objection to the local election results in Istanbul with seven votes in favour and four votes against. Millions of Turkish voters cast their votes nationwide on March 31 in local elections to choose mayors, city council members, and other officials for the next five years.
Ekrem Imamoglu, of the main opposition Republican People’s Party , took the oath as mayor of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city by population.
