Trump attacked Democrats for holding up a disaster aid deal, and reupped his claims that Puerto Rico is receiving too much federal assistance
Top senators negotiating the deallast week they are nearing an agreement after Republicans laid out a proposal behind closed doors that would increase Puerto Rico’s access to federal recovery cash. Sen. David Perdue , one of the Trump’s congressional allies, said last week the president was “on board” with the GOP’s offer.
Negotiations last month collapsed when Democrats pushed for more aid for the island territory against Republican protests. Trump since December has accused Puerto Rico’s leaders of mismanaging federal funds, in a series of tweets calling them “grossly incompetent” politicians who “spend money foolishly or corruptly.”
