Trump on Thursday directed the intelligence community to cooperate with a Justice Department probe into 'surveillance activities' during the 2016 presidential election
"Today’s action will help ensure that all Americans learn the truth about the events that occurred, and the actions that were taken, during the last Presidential election and will restore confidence in our public institutions," the White House statement said.
Barr tapped U.S. Attorney John Durham of Connecticut to lead the probe. Durham, a Trump appointee, was unanimously confirmed by the Senate, with support from both of Connecticut's Democratic senators. Democrats have called out Barr for opening his investigation while special counsel Robert Mueller leaves certain critical questions unanswered. Though Mueller did not bring any charges against Trump, he did not declare the president had not attempted to obstruct his investigation.
House Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff tweeted Thursday night that Trump and Barr were plotting to "weaponize law enforcement and classified information against their political enemies."Trump and Barr conspire to weaponize law enforcement and classified information against their political enemies.
"We don't need a third investigation of the same material just designed to further the propaganda against the Mueller investigation and against an apolitical and properly functioning FBI and intelligence community," Nadler told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow.
