Donald Trump faces another trial in 2024 for allegedly defaming E. Jean Carroll. The GOP presidential contender is criminally charged in two other cases.
Trump's lawyer Joseph Tacopina did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling Wednesday.Now that the court has denied Trump's motion for a new trial or to decrease the amount of the verdict, E Jean Carroll looks forward to receiving the $5 million in damages that the jury awarded her in Carroll II.
The Department of Justice last week abandoned a nearly three-year fight to shield Trump from civil liability in that lawsuit, which was the first one that Carroll filed. The DOJ had argued that Trump made the comments about Carroll as part of his job as president. Trump is appealing the verdict from the trial for Carroll's other lawsuit. The trial for the first lawsuit is set to begin as the Republican presidential primary season kicks off next year.In addition to the civil case, he faces two criminal indictments.
Trump separately is charged in Florida federal court with about three dozen felonies related to his retention of classified government records when he left office, and to his alleged obstruction of efforts by U.S. officials to recover those records.
