The event will be heavily secured with thousands of law enforcement officers and National Guard members deployed. Road closures, flight restrictions, and enhanced screening measures are expected. A comprehensive security plan is in place across the nation's capital in preparation for the presidential inauguration, which will be held under heightened security measures. The January 20th swearing-in of Donald Trump has been designated a national special security event. At a press conference on Monday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser outlined the plan, which will involve collaborative efforts between city and federal partners.
'For residents and businesses, most of the impact of the inauguration will be felt in the area directly around the National Mall, the U.S. Capitol, the Convention Center, and around Union Station,' Bowser stated. Bowser further explained that a combination of high-visibility patrols, fencing, and barriers will be progressively deployed throughout the week. Widespread road closures across downtown D.C. are anticipated for those who live and work in the District, she cautioned. Matt McCool, the U.S. Secret Service special agent in charge of the Washington field office, indicated that hundreds of thousands are expected to converge on the nation's capital to witness the presidential inauguration. Thousands of distinguished guests, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, several former presidents, Supreme Court justices, and other lawmakers, will also be present. 'All attendees will undergo screening. Designated checkpoints will be established for members of the public interested in attending the inauguration,' McCool stated. In addition to road closures and parking restrictions, flight restrictions within and around D.C. will also be enforced. 'More than 30 miles of anti-scale fence will be utilized for the inauguration,' McCool added, noting that drones will also be integrated into the security plan. The biggest threat, I think for all of us, remains the lone actor,' said United States Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger as he discussed preparations. Manger also cautioned the public about ticket scams that are likely to emerge.FBI Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg stated that two command posts will be operational—one at the Washington Field Office and another at FBI headquarters. 'We are not currently tracking any specific or credible threats to the inaugural ceremony or to the Capitol complex,' Sundberg remarked while reminding the public to remain vigilant. 'Our entire police department will be activated for the presidential inauguration,' declared D.C. Chief of Police Pamela Smith, adding that an additional 4,000 officers from across the U.S. will be on hand as reinforcements. Smith stated that 7,800 National Guard members will also be activated across D.C. to provide assistance with inaugural events. 'We will not tolerate any violence,' Smith emphasized. 'We want people to come to the District of Columbia to enjoy our city, but those who break the law will be arrested and held accountable for their actions.' Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke announced that over 900 uniformed security personnel will be monitoring the transit system during the inaugural events. Clarke stated that the transit system will open at 4 a.m. on inauguration day to accommodate the anticipated crowds. Country music star Carrie Underwood will perform 'America the Beautiful' at Trump's inauguration, according to the Associated Press. Other performers will include country singer Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio. Greenwood will perform as Trump takes the oath of office, according to Trump’s inaugural committee. Macchio is Trump’s choice to perform the National Anthem at the conclusion of the program. Macchio previously performed at the Republican National Convention in July, at Trump’s return rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in October after his first rally there was marred by an assassination attempt, and during his Madison Square Garden rally that drew criticism for crude and racist jokes from some speakers. Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 featured performances from the Rockettes, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and 16-year-old 'America’s Got Talent' singer Jackie Evancho. The Trump Vance Inaugural Committee released the timeline Monday of key events related to Trump’s inauguration, beginning Saturday with a grand fireworks display
