The DOJ and the legal team for former President Donald Trump submitted their picks for the Special Master review of documents seized by the FBI at his Florida home.
The Justice Department and former President Donald Trump's lawyers have submitted their respective nominees to serve as the special master reviewing materials seized from Mar-a-Lago and vastly different proposals for how the process should work.that Friday night's joint court filing also stressed the wide gap between the DOJ and Trump, as the two sides disagreed over how long the special master investigation would last, what he or she would consider, and who foots the bill.
The Justice Department wants the special master to move relatively quickly, wrapping up its review in five weeks, by October 17. Trump proposed 90 days. Griffith, a Bush appointee, served on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals from 2005 to 2020. In one of his final major rulings before retiring, he wrote the majority opinion rejecting House Democrats' attempt to subpoena Trump's former White House Counsel Don McGahn. Griffith later co-authored a report alongside other prominent conservative lawyers and officials debunking Trump's lies about massive fraud in the 2020 election.
Huck, who has his own law firm, had been a partner at the Jones Day law firm, which represented the Trump campaign in 2016, and a contributor to the conservative legal organization the Federalist Society. Dearie has served as a federal judge in New York since 1986, when he was nominated by former President Ronald Reagan. He retired in 2011 and is now a senior judge on the circuit.
For instance, both sides also disagree over who should pay for the special master. Trump's lawyers proposed that the costs incurred by the special master should be "split evenly" between him and the US government. The Justice Department told the judge that they think Trump should pay for the whole thing, because he's the one who is "requesting the special master.
