BREAKING: President Trump delays any decision to impose auto tariffs on car and auto part imports, deciding against ratcheting up trade disputes or impacting talks with European nations and Japan.
President Donald Trump arrives at John F. Kennedy Airport Thursday, May 16, 2019, in New York. Trump is in New York for a fundraiser.
Trump has made it clear that any final decision on the matter hinges on trade negotiations between the United States and the European Union. In public hearings last year, the idea of imposing import taxes on cars drew almost no support, even from the U.S. auto industry. “United States defense and military superiority depend on the competitiveness of our automobile industry and the research and development that industry generates,” Sanders said in a statement.
