State Department inspector general Steve Linick would potentially be the fourth inspector general in six weeks to be removed from their position by Trump.
Continuing a pattern of dismissals post-impeachment President Trump late on Friday shared with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., his intent to remove State Department inspector general Steve Linick, soon after he reportedly opened an investigation into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.... Capitol October 02, 2019 in Washington, DC. Linick reportedly met with congressional officials to brief them on information related to the impeachment inquiry centered around U.S. President Donald Trump. The move incensed Democratic lawmakers, including Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y.
The administration intends to replace Linick with Stephen Akard, the Director of the Office of Foreign Missions and previously the Chief of Staff for the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, as well as the foreign affairs advisor to then Governor Mike Pence. In 2017, Trump attempted to appoint Akard to the position of Director General of the Foreign Service, drawing rebukes from the American Academy of Diplomacy which sent athat read,"We write out of deep concern that he is not qualified for the enormous responsibilities of this position," citing his lack of experience.
Linick is the fourth inspector general to be removed by Trump in six weeks during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic—and following the impeachment trial concerning his pressuring of Ukraine to investigate Vice President Joe Biden.
