NEW YORK — (NEW YORK) -- A Manhattan grand jury has indicted former President Donald Trump, making him the first current or former president to face criminal charges.
It's not immediately clear what the indictment was connected to, or what charges Trump will face. The indictment is under seal.
Speaking to ABC News, Trump called the indictment"political persecution" and"an attack on our country.""From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats -- the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country -- have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement," Trump said in a subsequent statement.
Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer who wrote the check to Daniels in the closing days of the 2016 campaign, went to prison in part over the payment, which federal prosecutors believed amounted to an illicit campaign donation, according to court records.
