Justin Trudeau once again highlighted his government’s plan to have a special rapporteur examine the serious issue.

Liberal MPs have been filibustering — essentially giving long speeches — to prevent a vote on having Trudeau’s chief of staff Katie Telford from testifying.

Telford has testified at parliamentary committees in the past, but it has been parliamentary tradition that ministers testify at committees rather than their staff. Trudeau was asked at a media availability whether he would testify before the committee.“There are politicians out there who think that the best way to solve this very serious problem and this concern that Canadians have is by amping up the level of partisanship and political attacks,” he said.

“This is an approach that is serious, responsible, grounded in facts and independent decision making. Not playing partisan political games.” Trudeau has also announced plans to create a foreign agent registry and has tasked Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino to consult on the issue and bring forward legislation. Trudeau was asked why he didn’t simply take up a Senate bill that is already being debated.“There are lessons learned around what Australia and other countries have done around a foreign influence registry. I think it’s an important tool.
