Tropical storm watches have been issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The latest on Tropical Storm Fiona:
It will produce flooding rain and strong wind gusts in the Leeward Islands.It's far too soon to tell if this system will ever become a mainland U.S. threat.
On this track, Fiona should reach the Leeward islands by Friday night. It could then move near the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola this weekend into early next week. Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, Saba and St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, Guadeloupe, St. Barthelemy and St. Martin. Tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area within 36 hours, or in this case by Friday night.
That's because Fiona faces the obstacles mentioned earlier, including wind shear, dry air and potential track over some mountainous Caribbean islands such as Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.-Intensifying sooner, and therefore, curling north into the central Atlantic Ocean well off the U.S. East Coast, similar to Hurricane Earl last week.
