The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Ophelia has formed off the US mid-Atlantic coast.
This Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, satellite image provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows a potential tropical cyclone forming off the southeastern coast of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean. – Tropical Storm Ophelia has formed off the mid-Atlantic coast and is expected to bring rain, storm surge and windy conditions over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center said.
With top sustained winds of 50 mph , the system has reached tropical storm strength but was still being referred to as Potential Tropical Cyclone Sixteen by meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center. A storm surge warning was in effect for some areas, with surges between 3 and 5 feet forecast for parts of North Carolina, the center reported.
The system’s center is expected to come ashore in North Carolina early Saturday, move inland over eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia and near the Chesapeake Bay through the day on Sunday, Brennan said. The governor encouraged residents to prepare an emergency kit and follow the weather forecast closely.
The North Carolina Ferry System announced it was suspending several routes and the State Emergency Response Team planned to move to an enhanced watch Friday to ease coordination of resources, the governor’s office said.
