There will be no family gathering on Buckingham Palace's balcony this year.

Every year, the British royal family gathers for the spectacular parade known as Trooping The Colour. The event is held to celebrate the Queen’s birthday with the public, as well as members of the royal family. However, due to the evolving coronavirus pandemic, this year’s event – scheduled for June 13 – is the latest to be cancelled on the royals’ schedules.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the news in a statement, writing, “In line with government advice, it has been agreed that the Queen’s birthday parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, will not go ahead in its traditional form. A number of other options are being considered, in line with relevant guidance.”

Sadly, this means we won’t get to see the royal family gather on Buckingham Palace’s balcony to watch the flyover as in previous years. It is not yet known what an alternate celebration would look like at this stage, though it will likely be something digital. It is only the second time in the parade’s history that it has been cancelled – in 1955 it was called off due to the national rail strike.

The news comes amidst a busy weekend of royal news as representatives for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
