An Ottawa epidemiologist says he expects local hospitals to return to mandatory masking, following the lead of some in the U.S.

“It can’t be controversial in health-care settings where sick people are going to be that we require masking,” said uOttawa epidemiologist Raywat Deonandan. Each Ontario hospital is in charge of its own masking policies, but most have relaxed them. At The Ottawa Hospital, for example, masks are now optional in public spaces, such as hallways and cafeterias, in non-clinical areas such as administrative spaces, and in clinical areas, such as nursing stations, where direct patient care is not provided. Other hospitals have similar policies.
Senack and her family have been calling for better enforcement of masking policies to protect vulnerable patients from infection. “It only works the way you had it before,” he said. Previously, anyone entering a hospital was given a mask, and screening questions before you could enter.
