Sandra Maas accusing the San Diego television station of paying her $80,000 a year less than male-co-anchor for same job

Trial is slated to start next week in the lawsuit brought by former KUSI news anchor Sandra Maas, who is accusing the San Diego television station of paying her $80,000 a year less than her male-co-anchor for doing the same job.Maas’ lawsuit alleges McKinnon Broadcasting Co. violated the state’s Equal Pay Act, age and gender discrimination, and whistleblower retaliation. The suit does not state how much she is asking the jury to award her.

In 2010, she was promoted to co-anchor 5 p.m, 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts, and in 2016 produced a weekly “Healthy Living” segment. Instead of investigating pay inequity, the brief states, the station’s human resources director pressed Maas to reveal her sources. The company argued that it treated and paid her fairly, and said that in her last few years at the station —which she left in 2019 — Maas was “not a good team member or journalist.”

As for picking a jury, the station — which acknowledged in filings that it is “widely viewed in San Diego as a right-of-center news organization” — submitted several questions it wants to pose to jurors.
