On Aug. 31, Darroll Murray Atwell, 45, changed his not guilty pleas to guilty on three of five charges he’s facing. During a 30-minute Supreme Court appearance before Justice Gail Gatchalian, Atwell said he understood the ramifications of pleading guilty to the charges. He was represented by Scott Brownell.
“The stated purpose by Mr. Atwell of going to that residence was to enter the residence and this comes from his statement, ‘be mean to the individuals inside’ and demand drugs from them,” said MacDonald. MacDonald said Atwell and the man that was with him then fled the residence, dragging Campbell’s body back to the van and placing him in the back seat. She said they drove to Atwell’s residence to retrieve another vehicle and then drove in tandem, stopping for gas, to St. Croix.“Mr. Campbell’s remains were still in the backseat of that vehicle when it was lit on fire.”
