Beginning with Neshat’s photograph on Friday, the collection seeks to shed light on our stranger-than-fiction new reality. “The state of the world is changing daily,” said Millies and Sachs in a statement. “We want to react to this uncertainty by creating something that not only mirrors but also reflects on this in real time—an ongoing and continuously evolving visual journal.”
Boychild, who contributed an image of a dying bouquet purchased at the start of their self-imposed quarantine, reflects on the flowers as a metaphor for the ephemerality of life: “As the flowers descend from the apex of bloom, they become to me, more beautiful. In this time, I have thought a lot about death—many of us are having to face it as never before.”
“To me, this is an opportunity to reflect on life and its value,” Boychild wrote in the series’s materials, adding, “Systems of power, governments, societies are revealing the weak spots of care for the people within. This revelation comes at a great cost, a cost that was already clear to many of us and is now unavoidable by the whole.
