Cash is part of $300 million distressed hospital program, which also allocated $28 million each to two Imperial County facilities
Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside will receive a $33 million zero-interest loan from the state to help shore up its finances.
It is the largest single award among the 17 announced Thursday by the California Department of Health Care Access and Information. Enabled by California’s Distressed Hospital Loan Program, a joint creation of the state legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom, the loans are meant to provide working capital for “public and nonprofit community hospitals that are experiencing the most severe financial distresses.
According to a statement released by the governor’s office, the infusion of $300 million statewide is meant to “either reopen a recently closed facility or keep a facility on the brink of closure or reducing its services from closing.”to suspend the operation of the hospital’s labor and delivery department, citing a lack of patient volume.
No one was available from Tri-City or El Centro Regional Thursday to discuss how the loans might change their near-term operating plans. In addition to the three facilities mentioned above, the following organizations also received loans:Kaweah Delta Health Care District, Visalia, $20.75 millionMartin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, Los Angeles, $14 millionSan Gorgonio Memorial Healthcare District, Banning, $9.8 millionPalo Verde Hospital, Blythe, $8,5 millionBeverly Hospital, Montabello, $5 million
