From The Lede: The 20-year-old recordings feature early live performances by an array of future Muscle Shoals music standouts, including: Jason Isbell, Patterson Hood, John Paul White, Shonna Tucker, Ben Tanner and Gary Nichols.
The mostly acoustic performances are from a Muscle Shoals Songwriter Showcase held Thursday nights at Fizz, a bar and restaurant inside the Holiday Inn in Sheffield. Local musicians Mickey Buckins and Jerry McGee hosted the showcase.
Pettus, who’s been involved in music publishing and studios, videotaped the performances, which were also often broadcast live online, on his Sony camcorder. The camcorder used tiny digital tapes about the size of a domino. At that time, Muscle Shoals music was in limbo.
