Above all else, Pastrana goes fast, as he has shown on four wheels and two, dirt and pavement, racking up accolades andBut there’s one thing that has gnawed at him, one stage that has always seemed bigger than others: the Daytona 500. So, despite a dearth of experience in restrictor-plate racing, Pastrana is trying to qualify for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race, a goal that sounds absurd on the surface but might just be attainable.
Pastrana is an action sports legend, having bounced among race disciplines including motocross, rally racing and, more recently,, which features an obstacle course of sorts and plenty of drifting, spinning and technical work. But 200 laps at Daytona International Speedway has always felt like a bucket-list item.
Whether he makes it comes down to a couple of days of racing. The Daytona 500 features a 40-driver field, with 36 of those spots already locked up. Two drivers will earn spots in Sunday’s race during time trials Wednesday night by posting the fastest times among the group of six. Each driver gets one timed lap around the 2½-mile track.
