Mahar said not every Code Blue is physical. It could also be a verbal confrontation, or one where a weapon is brandished but not actually used. He said even those sorts of incidents can have a profound psychological effect on transit staff.
According to Mahar, incidents going before the assault case review committee are going up as of late. Previously, he said there might be upwards of 80 in a year, but now there are more than 100.“I disagree with this 100 per cent, but some staff think it’s part of the job, and that’s because they’ve become conditioned to them,” he said.Article content
“If you’ve ever been spit on, you don’t stop and analyze the event,” said Mahar. “Unfortunately, as a human you have an instant reaction, right?”Postmedia reached out to the City of Calgary for this story but did not receive a response. “The people that are living in the transit stations, in the bus shelters, the approaches to addressing that problem are multifaceted,” he said. “There’s probably 10 or 20 things that need to be done.”
