As Nicola Sturgeon announces her resignation after eight years as First Minister of Scotland, many in the trans community are wondering where this leaves the future of gender reform ✒️ KasiaLDelgado

“This is a huge loss,” they say, “and the fear is that there will be a U-turn on trans rights in particular. With Sturgeon’s departure, there are even fewer political leaders prepared to stand up for trans rights, going so far as to use the denial of trans rights as a pawn for political power.“The lack of support of LGBTQIA+ rights has a trickle-down effect on the general public, whose understanding might already be quite low or skewed by mistruths or fabrications in the right-wing media.

“More than ever, we need allies as neighbours, as workmates, but also as political leaders. The loss of Nicola Sturgeon will directly affect the progression of trans rights, if her replacement is less understanding and supportive of the particular issues that face those coming out and accessing services as trans.”

Freelance journalist Vic Parsons said that what happens next depends on Ms Sturgeon’s replacement. “As far as I understand it, the SNP under Sturgeon committed to fight Westminster in court over the use of Section 35 to block the. I know the Scottish Greens will stick to their pro-LGBTQ+ position, I hope that the next first minister will too.”

Potential successors to Ms Sturgeon including Constitution Secretary Angus Robertson and Health Secretary Humza Yousaf were supportive of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill. However rumoured challengers for the leadership also include Kate Forbes and Ash Regan. Ms Forbes is an evangelical Christian who has previously signed an open letter raising “concerns” about gender recognition reform, but was on maternity leave during the Scottish Parliament vote. Ms Regan resigned as a minister to rebel on the issue, with Ms Sturgeon accusing her of failing to make her objections known in private beforehand.
