Ahmed Naga, the first Muslim chief of the Long Hill Township Police Department, was placed on administrative leave Thursday. Naga filed a notice of intent to sue the township in September.

In the audio, committee member Brendan Rae tells a private investigator working for Toscano that Naga told him Committee Member Victor Verlezza had made a crude and racist remark. Toscano responded to the labor attorney’s letter by questioning the timeline of events leading up to Thursday’s suspension.
The chief is prohibited from contacting anyone in the police department or members of the township committee either in person or via email or phone, the letter states. In addition, the town has demanded the chief undergo a fitness for duty evaluation.
