Center Street Bridge over Third River, Nutley, NJ. 04/25/2020A hazardous materials crew in Essex County is investigating the illegal dumping of a petroleum product into a stormwater system that eventually ended up in a river tributary in Nutley, authorities said.

The Third River, which is also known as the Yantecaw River, links the Passaic River to tributaries in Passaic and Essex Counties. “Contaminants entering the Passaic River watershed adversely affect fish and other wildlife in and around the rivers,” Mayor Joseph P. Scarpelli said in the statement.
