A 22-team hockey tournament in support of the Pierplex, also known as the Whitney Pier rink is scheduled for March 16-19. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON - Jeremy FraserSYDNEY, N.S. — A community-based effort to save the Whitney Pier Rink has eclipsed its initial fundraising goals to give the facility a much more stable footing entering its off-season.
“It helps them out big time for the startup for next year,” said Kyle Mollons, one of the organizers of the Pier Community Hockey fundraiser, sponsored by Sydney Credit Union. “We are in the midst of getting more stuff going for them for the summertime now.”Mollons envisions a large summer ball hockey tournament, a basketball event, summer camps, roller hockey and a flea market that can also add revenue to the rink.
