Police made an arrest that night, but the killing sent another chill through a city deeply uneasy after a string of violent transit attacks.
Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie, acting as interim mayor, said Monday afternoon that the stabbing was hard for her to hear about.“We’re not moving in the direction we want to as a city. We know we can do better. We’re all meeting regularly so that we can fix that.”
“We need help. We need them to find space. We need them to provide workers for the shelters so we can help other Torontonians that need shelter and space.” “Our city is starting to normalize crime and disorder. We’re no longer surprised to hear of random acts of violence on our streets and subways.” He said police play “a critical role” in addressing the problems, but only as a “Band-Aid solution.”
“There is an unprecedented need for increased services geared to individuals with complex needs who are using the TTC for shelter and warmth,” the announcement said.
