Toronto could see funnel clouds develop this afternoon and evening, according to Environment Canada.
Just after 11:30 a.m., Environment Canada issued a weather advisory for Toronto, Hamilton and Dunnville — Caledonia — Haldimand for conditions favourable for the development of funnel clouds.
“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,” reads the alert. “This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground.” However, Environment Canada said there is a chance that this rotation could intensify, producing a weak landspout tornado.
Landspout tornadoes typically don’t cause significant damage, but can still be dangerous, potentially toppling trees, damaging roofs or tossing debris, according to Environment Canada. Funnel clouds usually appear with little to no warning. If a funnel cloud develops, prepare to seek shelter.
