They insisted that it was “not the usual struggle” of failing to recruit candidates in Labour strongholds like Liverpool and Manchester, but that “Tory shires” are also feeling the shortage.
It comes after the Tories in last year’s local elections contested a fewer proportion of seats in England and Wales than Labour for the first time in many years, although Wales will not go to the polls this May. Harvey Unwin, chairman of the Telford Conservative Association until last year, said his local party could struggle to get “any” candidates because activists fear a “hammering” because “the national positon is terrible”.
