San Jose Sharks questions for 2023-2024: Do they sign Anthony Duclair or trade Logan Couture? Will attendance improve, and can they win the NHL Draft Lottery?
San Jose Sharks’ Logan Couture waits for a face-off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third period at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023. SAN JOSE – Those who follow the San Jose Sharks can see that the organization — for the last year or two — has been trying to put in place some building blocks for the future.
The Sharks are now without their leading goal scorer , point producer , and their winningest goalie from last season’s team that went 22-44-16, the fourth-worst mark in the NHL. Prognosticators and oddsmakers peg the Sharks to not only miss the playoffs but finish at or near the bottom of the league’s 32-team standings.
But indications are the Sharks have the right guy, as Eklund in camp showed the same qualities that made him the seventh-overall pick two years ago: terrific hockey sense, elite playmaking skill, competitiveness, and tenacity. Now it’s a matter of doing that over a full season. Before training camp began, Grier didn’t dismiss the idea of re-signing either Duclair, 28, or Barabanov, 29, thereby having more players to build around and fewer holes to fill. Barabanov has said he wants to stay in San Jose, and Duclair is keeping his options open. More than likely, Grier’s decision will come down to how both players perform, whether they can reach agreements that make sense for the organization, and what other teams might be offering in terms of a trade.
Hertl said at the start of training camp that he doesn’t want to think about his long-term future in San Jose, instead focusing solely on this season. Hertl’s deal lasts another seven seasons and has a full no-move clause this season and next.
