Joseph Kosinski is flying high, thanks to ’TopGunMaverick,’ but the filmmaker already has another project on screens. “They complement each other in an interesting way,” he tells V.F.
was a really nice rhythm to be able to stretch and work out a different muscle, from a directing point of view, and try something with a different tone, different scale.to do something much more idiosyncratic, something that spans multiple genres. And then, at the same time, my third movie with Miles, so an opportunity for him to do something very different than the two roles he had done before.
Having played a wildland firefighter and a naval aviator, two characters that are very much in control of their own destiny, what I liked about Jeff [in] was that he would be the beta role for the first two-thirds of the film—much more vulnerable, much more impressionable. But, at the same time, this is a character who is damaged and carries a lot of guilt for his past, and I knew Miles could play that aspect of it well.
He’s got these leading man looks, but I was always really fascinated by his more comedic roles, certainly as Thor has become a more comedic character over time. He was so great inguest hosting—to be able to be great in that environment, a live television environment, you just need to have that natural comic timing, and he was so great in those appearances.
