The heads of Loblaw, Sobeys and Metro will appear before the House of Commons agriculture committee as part of its study on food inflation.

Amid public outcry over skyrocketing grocery prices and record-breaking supermarket profits, the CEOs of Canada’s three biggest grocery chains will be answering MPs’ questions on Parliament Hill on Wednesday afternoon.

Last year, Canada experienced its highest inflation in 39 years. While much of the public conversation around price increases focused on disruptions to the global supply chain and the knock-on effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine,By focusing on food — one of the sectors where prices are rising the fastest — the Star found that the companies’ explanation for higher prices didn’t hold up.

“The reason why the supermarket debate has touched such a nerve is people have been told it’s their fault that we have inflation, because they have too much work and too much money,” said Stanford. “For people who just paid $200 for a cart of groceries at Loblaws, the Bank of Canada governor saying that is outrageous and offensive.”Stanford testified before the committee last month and presented research that corroborated the Star’s investigative findings.
