Hall of Fame career began with Gwynn playing center field and collecting two hits against Philadelphia Phillies

Once at their San Diego hotel, Gwynn remained restless. So he went to the ballpark — 5 1/2 hours before the start of the game. Gwynn’s wife and his parents, who drove down from Long Beach, would settle into their seats somewhat closer to first pitch.

Gwynn said Wietelmann told him only a few players had worn No. 19. Ted Williams wore the number for the minor league Padres during their first season here in 1936. Wietelmann wore it in the 1950s for the team. The only player to wear it before Gwynn for the major league Padres was outfielder Gene Richards in 1978.“I’ll try to do the best that I can, Mr. Wietelmann,” Gwynn said.

Gwynn had been anxious on the flight from Hawaii wondering if he would play in the game and whether Hall of Fame left-hander Steve Carlton would be on the mound for the Phillies.Padres manager Dick Williams penciled Gwynn into the starting lineup in center field. He batted fifth in the order.Gwynn was surprisingly calm for his first plate appearance.
