We chat with BasedOnATrueStory star Tom Bateman for a spoiler-filled interview about the fun of the Peacock thriller series, the challenges of playing a likable serial killer & more:
Warning: SPOILERS for Based on a True Story!Even serial killers want in on the true-crime podcast craze, as seen in Based on a True Story. The Peacock series centers on pregnant realtor Ava and her former tennis star husband Nathan after they realize someone close to them is none other than a local serial killer, the Westside Ripper. Due to their financial struggles, they decide to blackmail him into helping produce a podcast chronicling his origins.
Tom Bateman: From the off, we read so much stuff, there's so many things that are made at the moment, so to really stand out from the crowd is quite rare and special and I really found [that] with this. They sent me the first two episodes, I think, when they asked to meet, and I just thought I'd never read anything like this.
Tom Bateman: Well it's great, I mean, it's great fun being part of anything that an audience reacts to, which hopefully they do with this, it's really great fun. And I'm a huge fan of Only Murders in the Building, I think it's such a fun, again, unique show. It does something, it takes a genre we know and turns it on its head and it's just unexpected.
Tom Bateman: I think it was a marriage of both.
The way that the finale goes, there feels like so much room to grow from there. Have you had conversations with Craig Rosenberg or anybody about continuing with Based on a True Story season 2?
