Tuesday, June 20: The federal office selloff, and the potential arena at LeBreton Flats, are opportunities to build smart, one reader says.

Ottawa has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to become a showcase for building beyond Net Zero. Michael Andlauer’s purchase of the Ottawa Senators will speed downtown development, and nine federal buildings are now on the sales block — which mean citizens can demand great, rather than “less bad.”

Canada has committed to action on climate. The government has policies in place to leverage enormous economies of scale in what it purchases and sells. So, let us observe how this is implemented with the nine buildings. We should expect that any purchaser will take responsibility for all carbon — both in building and in the carbon involved in operations.Article content

With regard to LeBreton Flats, let us ensure that no funding from any level of government is given without a commitment to building — from conception up — beautiful, functional infrastructure that gives back more than it takes from the environment over its lifetime. Time for Claridge Homes, which has an ownership stake in the Sens, to look at how its buildings on the LeBreton site are living up to regenerative building, and giving back to the city.

If you are keen to get an arena downtown, I would strongly urge you to focus on the Bayview Yards site recently identified by the City of Ottawa. It is within spitting distance of an O-Train stop. And you will likely not need to wait decades to see the first puck drop.
