Saturday, July 22: Indigenous athletes teach life lessons

Activate your Online Access NowNine months ago, I signed up as a volunteer sports medicine doctor to support the North American Indigenous Games. I signed up selfishly to improve my skills in sports medicine and help me on my path to be a Canadian team doctor for the Olympics. But what I am learning from this community is greater than any education or experience in sideline care management or injuries rehabilitation. I am learning about community, culture, and kindness.

I am learning about kindness as I removed five athletes from competition today and the coaches, parents and patients thanked me. They brought me lunch because they saw I was working through my breaks. They wanted to share what happened after they left me so I could walk their paths with them. Our Indigenous brothers and sisters value the same things we do, like sport and excellence and achievement.

Now, the investigation is still ongoing, and I won’t speculate on what exactly happened beyond what’s been reported. But I can say with certainty that if the LRT hadn’t been so horribly built, this young woman would still be alive. But if that was the goal, it’s failed miserably, because every second that the trains are down costs the city an enormous amount of money. And that’s just the impact on the municipal government. Think about how many people have been late for work, missed critical appointments, and otherwise spent far more time commuting than necessary because of the corners that were cut when the LRT was built.
