Gorman went home, and Bell threw home. Amazingly, Buck caught the ball, and Thomas, who wasn’t exactly fast, and didn’t want to run into Buck and add to his injury, was tagged out. I don’t know how Buck kept his mind in the game. Thomas was a low-average, big-power guy. By 1985 his career was winding down, he was 35, but he still had 32 home runs that year.
Martinez did come back for the 1986 season. He played in 81 games, hitting .181/.271/.269 with 2 home runs.
