Ahead of the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Paramount and Nickelodeon announce plans for a sequel and a connecting series.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is set to kick off a larger TMNT universe. The upcoming movie is the latest reboot in the franchise that follows the titular heroes Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo, which began as a comic book in 1984 from Mirage Studios.

Per Variety, Paramount and Nickelodeon have announced expanded TMNT universe plans ahead of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem release date on August 2. In addition to a movie sequel to Mutant Mayhem, this will include a two-season Paramount+ series titled Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that will be a "bridge" between the movies.

Could Mutant Mayhem Kick Off a Whole New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Subfranchise? With this announcement, it seems clear that the studios want to go all-in on Mutant Mayhem. If that's the case, it could make the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise the most robust it has been since the 1980s and 1990s. During that time, the characters populated a movie trilogy, multiple television series, comic books, and video games.

The closest the modern incarnation of the franchise has gotten to a proper subfranchise was in the mid-2010s. The 2014 Michael-Bay produced live-action movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles spawned the 2016 sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. While the first movie was a financial success, earning nearly $500 million off its roughly $150 million budget, both movies were rated Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes and the sequel only brought in $245.
