Before you pull out the carving knife and start boring holes into your gourd, keep in mind that the life span of a carved pumpkin is just anywhere between three and 14 days.

It looks like this Halloween reveler wanted to avoid carving their pumpkins -- and inviting insects and rodents to an autumn feast. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- In most area garden centers, pumpkins of many sizes, colors and shapes have taken the place of flowering hanging baskets and trays of perennials.

But before you pull out the carving knife and start boring holes into your gourd, keep in mind that the life span of a carved pumpkin is just anywhere between three and 14 days.In addition to causing your creation to cave in on itself, a rotting pumpkin can provide a food source for insects -- and a place for them to breed. This can lead to an unwanted infestation that could make a family member or someone admiring your fall display ill.• Bugs are most attracted to the pulp inside your pumpkin.

• It’s best to keep your pumpkins out of direct sunlight, as sun exposure will accelerate the decomposition process. • Knowing that carved jack-o-lanterns can attract a variety of insects, it’s best to keep your porch pumpkins away from doors and windows to create distance from pests trying to enter your home.
